  1. Well put. I’ve been living in Austin for nearly two decades, and it is always a joy to return to this town after months of traveling abroad. I am fond of saying: “I might not always live here, but I will always have a place here.”

    • Thanks, Derek. I like your quote as it’s so true. Austin is diverse enough to encompass all kinds. My parents live just west of Austin and the city has become a pass-through to get to their house. This trip will be the first in a while that is just about enjoying my former home. I’m thrilled to be sharing it with my fellow Twitter travel lovers. Look forward to meeting you!

  2. As a SXSWi attendee for the last 2 years, I fell in love with Austin, and can’t wait to go back :)

  3. Thanks for tips for my next trip to Austin – the first one was way too short (just a week) but included that perfect all-around weekend weather you’re talking about =)

  4. I just found your site thanks to a link to your Carnaval post (I am in Brazil now as well). I couldn’t help notice you’re a Texan (no, really, it is impossible not to notice with that top banner logo, haha!) so I naturally noticed this post as well. I am NOT a Texan but I do call Austin home. OK, I left 3 years ago to travel but when I talk about home I consider it Austin. So much to love and miss about that great city.

    • Oh, yeah. You’d have to be a fool not to figure out I’m a proud Texan! Ha! I lived in Austin for four years and my parents retired in the area as well. I hope to get back there soon. It’s such a great place and I miss it so. Plans to come back anytime soon? Where are you at in Brazil?

  5. I don’t have any real plans to get back. I am in Salvador da Bahía now and my six months of tourist visa time will expire in about a month. Then I am off to Europe until September. After that I do plan a visit back to Austin, but just a visit not an end to my travels. Are you still in Brazil? If you make it to Salvador before you leave let me know. Oh, also, I spent a lot of time in Costa Rica, though I took my Spanish classes in Guatemala.

    • Sadly I’m not in Brazil any longer. It was a week-long trip only. I know Salvador. That’s my boss’ hometown. She was showing me photos from her trip home at Christmas. It’s really a beautiful place, at least the beaches and stuff. I’m really interested in the history of that area and would like to visit. Have you spent any time in Recife? I hear it’s the Venice of South America and the beaches and water are perfection.

Where are you going in Europe? I’ll be in Ireland in April.

  6. A Brazilian friend I met traveling lives in Recife so I have been to visit him twice. In fact, I went there for Carnaval and it was great. I like it there, and nearby Olinda is a lovely colonial center as well. I don’t know about the Venice of South America but the beach of Recife actually reminded me of the beaches in Rio. As for Europe, I fly from Brazil to Manchester in early April and probably in late April I will head toward Spain.

    • I think the Venice of South America reference referred to the series of canals in the city. I may need to get more clarification though. Headed to the UK in the spring, your system will be in for a shock weather wise. I was just looking at weather in Ireland in early April: high in the 50s and lows in the 30s. That’s Houston’s winter on a very cold day. HA! Oh well, I like the cold. I’ll be following along as you go to Spain. My husband really wants to visit and I’m always game to go some place new!

  7. Oh, those. I think they are actually rivers not canals, but I am not sure of that. But, yes, there are several bridges connecting various parts of the old central part of town. Thanks for the weather tip. I better dress appropriately on the plane! Do you know you plans for Spain. I haven’t decided mine yet.

    • Thanks for the clarification on the rivers. A bit of good news regarding the weather in the UK (at least for me and Ireland), I’ll be there right before the rainy season begins (I thought all the seasons were pretty rainy). You know the expression, “April showers bring May flowers”? Yeah, well that’s where it came from. As for Spain, I have no plans as of yet. However, that could change with one email with an awesome flight deal coming to my inbox. ;-)
